Located on Northeast Portland’s thriving Alberta Street, this site has been the location of a well-loved children’s bookstore for a number of years.

 

The bookstore itself is surrounded by substantial garden and outdoor deck space, which the owner decided she wanted to incorporate into her store’s programs. Her end goal was to be able to use the gardens, seasonally, for gatherings and book readings. Constructive Form designed a freestanding, translucent-roofed structure that would provide shelter to the store’s outdoor deck.

 

The project also opened a discussion with Portland’s Bureau of Development Services about how our client could ensure she would meet fire safety requirements for the new exterior covered space. We also helped our client determine the upgrades necessary to increase building and outdoor area accessibility.
