Sellwood Garden ADU

Portland, Oregon 2017

This project involves the addition of a new attached ADU to a 1920’s era house in the Sellwood neighborhood in SE Portland.

An existing attached garage was removed and replaced with a new attached ADU.

The client’s goals were to provide a multi-generational ‘aging-in-place’ living space and a separate, private studio for guests, with its own private entry and outdoor space. The new addition and space was thoughtfully designed to integrate with the existing 1920s era house and mature landscaping, while providing a sunlit, airy and functional space in a constrained 200 square foot footprint. Connections between indoor and outdoor living areas were developed with a separate, private patio and generous operable transoms and skylights for natural light and privacy. The existing home’s kitchen and bathroom were also renovated and updated for ‘aging-in-place’ as part of the project.

An adjustment through the City of Portland Planning and Zoning was completed to allow for reuse of the existing nonconforming garage footprint and maximize space for the tight urban space in an existing Portland neighborhood.
