This project for the addition of a walapini (earth-sheltered cold frame) on a
typical 50 ft. x 100 ft. NE Portland urban infill site provides a year round, solar
sheltered and private, low street profile greenhouse and garden for the client
who are avid gardeners – to grow vines, hops, and other crops.

The new detached structure, built below grade, has an exposed concrete floor
and drain with sump pump, concrete retaining walls, vaulted wood offset ceiling
with a polycarbonate roofing and above grade walls to maximize sunlight and
solar gain and a tall wood center pole for vines and trellises. The client acted the
General Contractor, to build the structure over 2-3 seasons.
