This project is for the construction of an urban cabin; the clients’ wish was for a compact residence within the Portland city limits that would provide necessary accommodations and minimal maintenance and also accentuate connections to the surrounding forest and native understory landscape. The site is situated in an environmental zone near a stream that flows towards Tryon Creek Park. Given the steep topography, a geotechnical investigation stipulated a limited buildable area at the high point of the site on which to locate the new residence.
The design studies explored daylighting and a simple articulation of the building roof to help direct rainwater downhill. The double-height section opens to the south for tree-filtered sunlight and views while also encouraging natural ventilation strategies. The open construction to the west side would provide for sun-shading, and this sheltered entry steps down to the natural grade of the landscape.
