North Lombard Spa

Portland, Oregon | Unbuilt

Client(s): Private

Scope of Work: Full architectural services; permitting services; coordination with Multnomah County Health and the City of Portland

This modern, urban retreat is an adaptive reuse project in North Portland, designed complete with a private courtyard, indoor and outdoor soaking pools, sauna, steam room and massage rooms.

Our renovation plan for this 1950’s-era building included a change of building occupancy, preservation of the original wood structure, and a full seismic upgrade. Our plan also included a full build-out of the building and development of the rest of the site to make it feel and function like a spa.

The resulting design maintains strong connections between the spa’s interior- and outdoor-use spaces. The outdoor courtyard, which, for us, is the centerpiece of the design, incorporates multiple sensory experiences while maintaining a serene, private atmosphere.
